Cavities, also known as tooth decay, are a common dental issue that occurs when bacteria in your mouth produce acids that eat away at your teeth. If left untreated, cavities can lead to severe toothache, infection, and even tooth loss. That’s why it’s crucial to address them early.
Dental fillings are a common treatment for cavities that work by filling the hole in your tooth, stopping the decay from progressing further. Choosing the right dental filling can help restore your tooth’s function and appearance. It can also prevent further complications and improve your overall oral health.
You’ll find various dental filling options in Elk Grove Village, IL. Each type has its advantages and drawbacks.
Each type of filling has its place, depending on the location and extent of the cavity, your budget, and your personal preferences.
Several factors come into play when choosing a dental filling, and one of the most important is the location of the cavity.
Durability is key for cavities in the back teeth. Amalgam or gold fillings are often the best choices because they can withstand chewing pressure and last for many years.
Aesthetics are more important when it comes to cavities in the front teeth. Composite or ceramic fillings, which your dentist can match to the color of your teeth, are usually the preferred choice.
Cost is another factor to consider. Gold fillings are the most expensive, while amalgam fillings are usually the most affordable.
Your personal health considerations also matter. If you have allergies to certain metals, you’ll want to go with other options.
Finally, your dentist’s recommendation is crucial. They can guide you toward the best choice based on your situation.
Getting a dental filling in Elk Grove Village, IL starts with a thorough oral examination. Your dentist will check for signs of cavities, such as toothache or visible holes.
If your dentist detects a cavity, they will likely recommend an X-ray to help determine the extent of the decay. This is critical to know whether a cavity is all you need, or if a more serious procedure, such as a root canal, is necessary.
Before the procedure begins, local anesthesia is usually administered to ensure a pain-free experience. The dentist then prepares the tooth for the filling by removing the decayed part of the tooth.
The dentist cleans the tooth once the decay is removed to ensure no bacteria or debris is left behind. The dentist then places filling material into the cavity and shapes it to match the contour of the tooth.
After the dentist places the filling, they harden it using a special light.
Finally, the dentist checks your bite and makes any necessary adjustments. This ensures comfort and functionality.
After getting a dental filling, proper care is crucial to ensure its longevity.
Good oral hygiene is key, as regular brushing and flossing can prevent further decay. Avoiding hard or sticky foods can also help, as these can dislodge or damage the filling.
Regular dental checkups are another critical component, as these allow your dentist to monitor the condition of the filling.
If you experience sensitivity or discomfort, contact your dentist, as this could indicate a problem with the filling. Early treatment of a failed filling is instrumental in a successful retreatment.
Finding the right dentist to handle dental fillings near you is crucial, as it ensures you get the best care for your teeth.
To find a great dentist near you, ask for recommendations from friends, family, or coworkers. They can provide valuable insight into the dentists they visit.
Online reviews can also be helpful, as they glimpse other patients’ experiences with the dentist and staff. They also give you a great high-level overview via star ratings.
Consider the dentist’s qualifications and experience. You want a board-certified dentist with many years of successfully treating cavities in Elk Grove Village, IL. You can usually find this information on the dental office’s website.

Dr Boyle filled 3 cavities so painlessly I didn’t feel any discomfort even after the numbing receded. You couldn’t ask for a dentist with such a gentle loving touch, but a firm and steady hand explaining the process every step of the way. 10/10 would recommend to a friend.
I’ve been going here for a while now. Dr Balaney is so nice I love that he joined the practice. I had to have a cavity filled. I went before work and they had me in and out within 20 minutes. No waiting or messing around they got straight to the point. They always try to work with your schedule to get you in. The front desk staff is always super nice too. I know the hygienist do most of the work and every single one I’ve had have been so nice.
Thank you, Dr. Balaney and April, for providing excellent care this week. You replaced an old filling. The procedure was done with ease, no pain during or days later. I appreciate you and the staff that work at Village Smiles. Always welcoming, friendly, and efficient. Keep up the good work!!
Great experience! From the moment I met all members of the staff here. They always recognize me and are so warm and welcoming! This isn't the only thing though, most people don't enjoy visiting the dentist. This holds true for myself. Veronica (hygienist) cleaned my teeth and explained all the procedures while she was doing them. Following this I did need some cavities filled. Dr. Balaney was very specific about the work he was going to do and where he would be working. He also reassured me that it would not hurt too bad since I really dislike the drill. The fact that this entire team put me, the patient, first means the world to me! From the front end Veronica, to being in the Dr's chair, I felt comfortable and actually didn't mind being at the dentist... which says a lot for me! Even brought my family here and will continue to in the future! Thank you Village Smiles!!
2017 Happy Veterans Day At least it was for me. I am a 72 year old Veteran. The 6,000 plus Dentists of the Illinois State Dental Society wanted to show Illinois Veterans they care. So I set up an appointment at Village Smiles in Elk Grove Village Illinois near my apartment. I was just expecting an exam and maybe a cleaning but was I surprised when Dr. Sean Abrams and his staff not only cleaned my teeth but fixed one tooth that was broken and filled another one that had a cavity. They worked on me for 2 ½ hours. It was all free of charge. I haven’t been to a dentist in 10 – 12 years because my only income is Social Security. I was afraid that I would get an infection in my teeth and it would go to my heart. So I am so thankful to Dr. Abrams and his staff for fixing my teeth. They were wonderful. Thank You William Kaufman 2018 Yea, they gave me new teeth. Now I can smile. Dr. Sean Abrams and his staff at Village Smiles are wonderful. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
